shots lost their lives last month. where a fast-moving fire overtook the firefighters as they scrambled to get inside protective gear. abc s brandi hitt was there. reporter: this is our first look at the scene where 19 brave firefighters lost their lives. an american flag now blows over the charred site, fellow fighters call hallowed ground. just heartbroken about losing 19 adopted sons. such extreme fire behavior that nobody expected what would occur. reporter: the elite squad, known as the granite mountain hot shots was overrun by fire last month as they tried protecting homes from the fast-moving yarnell hill wildfire. officials say the team was trying to clear the area of dry brush when the flame shifted and rushed toward them giving the crew no time to escape. they deployed their fire shelters as a last resort but the heat was too intense. nobody cut and run the other direction. nobody tried to get out of the
