Taipei, Dec. 6 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Monday issued heavy rain advisories for Keelung, Taipei, and New Taipei cities in northern Taiwan, and Yilan County in the northeast.
As we edge our way through the darkness, a flash of black and white suddenly appears on the trail in front of us. “Isn’t that snake venomous?” one of our party exclaims.
Moments after encountering the krait, we happen upon a common mock viper settling down to sleep. Our team of amateur explorers moves in for a close look: “There, that vine-like thing in the tree.”
This is no ordinary hike. We are scaling up one part of the Taipei Grand Trail, navigating its 14km in darkness surrounded by a forest crawling with critters.

ICYMI: We’ve previously talked about the best countries for introverted travellers. But this time, allow us to talk about our fave “extroverted countries” that are vibrant, full of life, and anything but boring. Essentially, these destinations are perfect for travellers who enjoy being around people; whether it involves lots of socialising, basking in the frenetic pace of cities, or both.
As an extrovert myself, I’m not really that choosy about where I travel. Although, if anything, many would say that most top destinations cater especially to the extroverted traveller. Still, it’s true that some places are more exciting and exuberant than others; the same way that some nationalities and ethnicities simply have a better reputation for being warm and friendly.

Yangminshan office fined for buffalo killing woman
By Yang Kuo-wen and Jake Chung / Staff reporter, with staff writer
The Yangmingshan National Park Management Office was on Jan. 12 fined NT$3.96 million (US$139,378) in damages to be paid to four descendants of a woman surnamed Chen (陳), who was on Aug. 11, 2018, attacked by a water buffalo in the park and died 15 days later, the Taiwan High Court said.
The then-86-year-old Chen was walking along a path in the Qingtiangang (擎天崗) area when a grazing water buffalo in heat attacked her.
Chen’s sons and daughters accused the national park office of mismanagement and failing to maintain the park’s facilities to keep visitors safe, as the incident leading to Chen’s death was preceded by multiple incidents in which water buffaloes had injured visitors.
