The mid-displacement maxi-scooter in Europe is currently populated with offerings like the Yamaha TMax, Suzuki Burgman and Honda Forza all of which cost a pretty penny. Taiwanese scooter manufacturer Kymco is now joining the action with its flagship scooter, the AK 550. The 2021 model complies with strict Euro 5 emission norms and even gets a few extra goodies that make it a tempting option. More importantly, at around €9,999 (roughly Rs 8.88 lakh) it’s one of the cheapest scooters in this segment in Europe.
Running a cleaner engine does have its drawbacks, as the 2021 Kymco AK 550 is a bit down on power. Its 550cc inline twin-cylinder motor has been retuned to make 51.7PS at 7,500rpm, 2.5PS less than the previous-gen model. Thankfully, its torque output hasn’t changed (55.64 Nm) which continues to peak at 5,500rpm. That’s still more than the TMax which belts out 46.6PS from its 560cc motor.

To celebrate 20 years of the Yamaha TMax, Yamaha Europe has issued a special edition for this maxi scooter. Produced in a limited production run of 560 units, the 20th Anniversary TMax receives a host of dress-up parts.
Decked out in a Tech Graphite paint job matched with bronze coloured wheels, this commemorative edition of the TMax also gets panels and front fenders made from forged carbon-fibre. Differing from the usual woven carbon-fibre typically used in automotive applications, forged carbon-fibre is made from a paste of fibres shaped in a hydraulic press, giving a marbled appearance.
The seat is also differentiated from the standard TMax with sporty styling and contrasting yellow stitching. Completing the look of the 20th Anniversary TMax is special edition graphics and numbered badge celebrating two decades of the TMax.
