The authorities in Afghanistan reported Wednesday the arrest of 11 Taliban members involved in a wave of targeted killings in the country, including one on the well-known Afghan journalist Yama Syawash in November in Kabul.
The arrests were possible thanks to a tip from an informant and (it) enabled Kabul Police Department to identify, locate and apprehend an 11 member Taliban terror cell responsible for numerous bombings including murder of iconic Yama Siawash on November 7, First Vice President Amrullah Saleh tweeted. KABUL - Interior Minister Masoud Andarabi on Monday said six suspects belonging to Taliban and Daesh groups had been arrested in Kabul and provinces in connection with killing of journalists. He told this in a joint meeting of government and media representatives chaired by Second Vice President Sarwar Danish and attended by Attorney General Office, deputy interior minister and deputy spymaster, members of journalist unions. A statement from the second Vice President Office said the meeting discussed recent terrorist attacks that left a number of journalists, civil society and rights activists dead. Vice President Danish said recent attacks and incidents were shocking for the entire nation in which renowned personalities from media, civil society and rights bodies lost their lives.

Kabul, Dec 21 (efe-epa).- Afghan journalist Rahmatullah Nikzad was shot dead on Monday in front of his house in the central Ghazni province, marking the fourth targeted killing of a journalist in the country within the last two months. .
“Another Afghan journalist killed today,” tweeted nonprofit Afghan Journalists Safety Committee, announcing that Nikzad had been shot outside his house on Monday evening.
The group urged the Afghan government to “take serious measures towards protection of journalists” from the “serial killings.”
Interior ministry spokesperson Tariq Arian tweeted confirmation of the death of Nikzad – who collaborated with various international media outlets – and condemned the incident as an attack on freedom of expression committed by “those who see journalists’ deaths as a way of hiding their war crimes.”
