Three Yale affiliates are among the 36 distinguished scholars and leaders elected to the American Philosophical Society at its April meeting. They are historian David Blight, former Yale College Dean and art historian Mary Miller, and Yale School of Management alumna Indra Nooyi, a former senior trustee on the Yale Board of Trustees and former PepsiCo CEO.
Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, the American Philosophical Society is the oldest learned society in the United States. Eight members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) have recently been named to endowed professorships by vote of Yale’s Board of Trustees.
They are:
Keith Baker, a particle physicist known for his contributions to the discovery of the Higgs boson and his work on dark matter, has been appointed the D. Allan Bromley Professor of Physics. Read more

New principles regarding fossil fuels to guide Yale’s endowment
The Yale Board of Trustees last week approved a new set of ethical investment principles (PDF) to guide the university’s decisions concerning companies producing fossil fuels.
The five principles, recommended by an expert faculty panel appointed in October by President Peter Salovey, create new standards for the activities, behaviors, and characteristics of fossil fuel companies that would warrant divestment.
The principles establish a framework through which Yale can encourage fossil fuel producers to adopt more sustainable practices and advance the shift to a decarbonized energy future – and to call out and make ineligible for investment by Yale those companies that do not.
