A leader of a Japan-based crime syndicate conspired to traffic uranium and plutonium from Myanmar in the belief that Iran would use it to make nuclear weapons, US prosecutors.
The United States has charged Takeshi Ebisawa, a member of the Japanese yakuza criminal organisation with trafficking nuclear material obtained from Myanmar and attempting to sell it to fund an illegal arms deal. Ebisawa, a yakuza leader, and his co-defendant Somphop Singhasiri, as per AFP, were previously charged with drug trafficking and firearms offences in April 2022.
