Sarnia city council Monday unanimously approved the required rezoning and official plan amendments to let London-based Xoana Corporation transform parts of the 7,600-square-metre former Central United Church into 15 new units.

The proposal would also see the worship space and sanctuary converted to theatre use for community rentals, such as orchestra performances, plays and for weddings, said Xoana’s Anthony Mota, noting Monday he was “ecstatic” to get council’s approval.
“We’re glad and we’re appreciative of all the support the community has given us so far,” he said. “There have been many positive comments.”

The congregation from a United Church in Sarnia that recently sold its building is “nesting” with another, and apartments are being eyed for its former building at the corner of George and Brock streets.
“We’re excited to see what comes out of it, how it can be preserved and used for another purpose,” said Wayne Caslick, a board member with Central United that held its last service at the church near downtown in mid-November.
