Despite complaints about his management of COVID-19 and the economy, Xi Jinping will receive a third term as China's president at a rubber-stamp parliament this weekend.
With Chinese President Xi Jinping securing an unprecedented third term in power, fears are mounting that Sino-U.S. tensions may escalate further over Taiwan and economic security, forcing Japan to review its Beijing-facing policies.
"Xi's full control means his team will be fully responsible for any policy mistake," said Yang Zhang, assistant professor at American University's School of International Service in Washington.
Chinese president Xi Jinping, who is completing a 10-year tenure this year, will be the first Chinese leader after party founder Mao Zedong to continue in power, ending three decades of the rule followed by his predecessors to retire after two five-year tenures.
