A five-round schedule has been announced featuring races in Europe and Asia including a mix of permanent and street circuits. Following in the footsteps of WTCR, the championship will also begin June due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with Italy s Autodromo Vallelunga hosting the first ever event on 18-20 June. From there, the series will head to Belgium s Zolder circuit on 2-4 July, before joining forces with the WTCR by appearing on the support bill at Spain s Motorland Aragon circuit.

Nürburgring becomes season opener on revised schedule

Nürburgring becomes season opener on revised schedule 2 months ago The Nürburgring Nordschleife will now open the 2021 World Touring Car Cup season after series organisers took the decision to amend the calendar for the upcoming campaign. Ongoing issues as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic – which include travel restrictions and national lockdowns across Europe – have resulted in the opening two meetings of the season being postponed. Hungary had been due to open the campaign but will now move back to a new date in August to conclude the European leg of the season, whilst the planned meeting at the Slovakiaring has been replaced by a round at Adria in Italy at the end of July.

WTCR has staged three races per weekend since the amalgamation of the TCR International Series and World Touring Car Championship at the end of the 2017 season, with races one and three set by separate qualifying sessions and race two featuring a reverse of the top 10 qualifiers from race one. However, the series will now return to the traditional two races per weekend format previously used by the WTCC, fulfilling a measure that was initially planned as part of a cost-saving package introduced for 2020 before the disruption to the calendar caused by the pandemic meant the three-race format was maintained.
