Former Sask teacher gets jail sentence for sexual assaults

Saskatoon / 650 CKOM Apr 19, 2021 11:13 AM A man who used to teach in Wynyard and Foam Lake has been sentenced to 609 days in jail for sexually assaulting three students in the 1990s. Gerard Loehr, 58, was sentenced Friday in Yorkton Provincial Court. He initially was facing five counts of sexual assault and six counts of sexual interference relating to incidents that occurred in the province between 1990 and 1996. He was found guilty on three counts of sexual assault Nov. 13 in Wynyard Provincial Court. In addition to the jail sentence, Loehr also was ordered to give a DNA sample and to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Former Sask teacher sentenced for historic sexual assaults

  YORKTON A former Saskatchewan teacher was sentenced in Yorkton Provincial Court on Friday for three historic sexual assaults. Gerard Loehr, 58, was handed a sentence of 609 days for the three charges. Two of the chargers will be served consecutively and one served concurrently. In total, the sentence works out to just over one year and eight months in jail. His sentence includes the 21 days of credit from being in pre-trial custody. In November 2020, Loehr appeared in Wynyard Provincial Court on five counts of sexual assault and six counts of sexual interference. A judge found Loehr guilty on three counts of sexual assault and not guilty on six counts of sexual assault and sexual interference.

Sentencing of music teacher for sexually assaulting former students delayed due to COVID-19

Loehr was initially scheduled to be sentenced in January 2021 but the matter was adjourned to February due to COVID-19 and similar charges against Loehr in Ontario. Loehr was arrested in Ottawa on Feb. 17, 2020, and brought back to Saskatchewan to face numerous charges stemming from incidents that occurred in the 1990s when he was a band and music teacher in Wynyard and Foam Lake schools. During a July 2020 trial, five former students testified against Loehr. They ranged in age from 12 to 14 at the time of the incidents. Loehr left Saskatchewan in 1996 and taught in Ottawa schools. In 2019 Ottawa Police charged him with sexual assault and sexual interference against 11 students. Loehr taught music in middle school and privately in his home.

Sentencing of former Sask music teacher convicted of sexual assault delayed

On the Saskatchewan charges, Loehr was arrested at his residence in Ottawa on Feb. 17, 2020, and brought back to Saskatchewan. Loehr was found guilty in Wynyard Provincial Court on Nov. 13, 2020, on three charges of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference. The incidents occurred in the 90s when he was a band and music teacher in Wynyard and Foam Lake schools while he worked in the Shamrock School Division. Five former students testified against Loehr during his July 2020 trial. They ranged in age from 12 to 14 at the time of the incidents. Wynyard RCMP had launched the historic sexual assault investigation against Loehr in February 2019 after a woman reported an assault that occurred in the 90s. Five other women later came forward to police.
