There was a buzz of activity in Ocho Rios this morning as nearly 1,000 Chinese vacationers descended on the resort town to experience Jamaica’s world-class tourism offerings.
There was a buzz of activity in Ocho Rios this morning as nearly 1,000 Chinese vacationers descended on the resort town to experience Jamaica’s world-class tourism offerings. The group represents the single largest number of Chinese visitors to vacation on the island ever.
The visitors were brought into Ocho Rios on board the Costa Atlantica cruise ship as part of China’s first around the world cruise. Ocho Rios, which is a preferred destination for the Chinese, is only one of the 28 destinations in the 18 countries that will be visited by the group.

Opening the Summit, UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, said “Destinations need to consider infrastructure, investment and jobs, intangible benefits such as how the country is perceived and the most effective way to involve the community when looking at the legacy of mega-events.”
In terms of infrastructure, one benefit of Brazil’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2014 was that its airports are now privatized. Brazil’s Vice-Minister of Tourism, Vinícius Lemmertz, said: “The World Cup set the agenda for public-private cooperation.”

In his opening speech, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai highlighted that Colombia and Medellin are an example of the Assembly’s theme “Tourism: Fostering inclusive development and social transformation”:
