Lidl launches carbon neutral cheese plan

Supermarket Lidl GB is to create carbon-neutral Cheddar by the end of 2021.   The move forms part of Lidl’s commitment to reduce carbon across its supply chain and support more sustainable farming practices.  The supermarket is working directly with supplier Wyke Farms, and its farming base, on the carbon-neutral cheddar project.  Through sustainable working practices, the supplier will aim to save 22.5 million kgs of CO2 per year, the equivalent weight ofmore than 1,875 double-decker buses.  At Lidl GB, chilled cheese is the second biggest carbon emitter in the supply chain, after fresh meat.  The cheddar will reach carbon neutrality by the end of the year, through a mixture of sustainable farming, improved business practices and the purchase of “gold-standard” carbon credits.

Chilled food body helps battle Brexit export red tape

The Chilled Food Association (CFA) is supporting vets battling the rising tide of costly red tape needed to allow Great Britain to transport short shelf-life composite foods of animal origin into the EU. A CFA survey of chilled and frozen composite products estimated that 30,000 Export Health Certificates (EHCs) would be required where none were before. According to Animal and Plant Health (APHA) data provided to the industry, there was a 126-fold increase in the total number of EHCs for EU export issued in January/February 2021 compared with the same period last year. The number rose from 491 in that period in 2020 to 61,802 in 2021. Before Brexit, GB was part of the EU trading bloc, so such validation was not needed.

Wyke joins fight over ruinous AD plants rates hike | News

Wyke Farms MD Rich Clothier said the rate hike was ruining investor confidence in AD plants Wyke Farms has joined more than 100 anaerobic digester operators in a group litigation against the government’s Valuation Office Agency for imposing “punitive” rate rises on the sector. The West Country-based cheesemaker said a revaluation of rates payable by renewable energy operators by the VOA in February had seen its AD plant’s rateable value rise by 91% year on year to £535k. After taking into account a 51.2p in the pound discount via the VOA’s non-domestic rate multiplier, Wyke’s AD plant rate bill would rise from £140k to £265k this year, said rating expert and litigation organiser Chris Handel.
