The morning of Saturday 17th April signalled the start of the much-anticipated mixed doubles event at the 2021 Latin American Singles and Mixed Doubles Qualification tournament in Rosario, Argentina with a handful of fixtures from the Round of 16 getting play underway.
Two names who have been amongst the headlines in recent days, Cuba’s Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca Carrazana were amongst the successful partnerships from the session.

Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca Carrazana were the only pair to upset the seeding list, with the no.10 seeds earning an impressive 4-1 victory over the duo seeded three positions higher in Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre and Leyla Gomez (11-7, 11-4, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7).

Present at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Andy Pereira has failed to obtain one of the prize tickets for Tokyo 2020 on offer at the 2021 Latin American Singles and Mixed Doubles Qualification tournament in Rosario, Argentina after coming to terms with elimination at the Round of 16 hurdle on Thursday 15th April.

Cuba’s Andy Pereira, no.11 seed, couldn’t build upon his early advantage in his meeting with no.5 seed Gaston Alto, as the Argentine hit back with four consecutive game wins to strike victory (10-12, 11-7, 12-10, 11-4, 11-9). Alto now turns his attention to another player who graced the Olympic stage in 2016 with Mexico’s Marcos Madrid prevailing in his match with Chile’s Gustavo Gomez (11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-2, 5-11, 11-6).

Offered a second opportunity to qualify for Tokyo 2020 with participation in the men’s singles second knock-out stage, Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre has fallen short again at the 2021 Latin American Singles and Mixed Doubles Qualification tournament in Rosario, Argentina following his quarter-final defeat at the hands of Dominican Republic’s Wu Jiaji on Friday 16th April.

Competing on the Olympic stage in Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro, the prospect of Marcelo Aguirre failing to leave Rosario with a ticket to Tokyo seemed unthinkable, but that is exactly what has happened. Wu Jiaji deserves tremendous credit for his efforts and was simply too hot to handle for Aguirre, with the second seed registering a perfect 4-0 win against one of the continent’s finest players (12-10, 11-7, 11-6, 17-15).
