intimidating for the people involved, that they don t want to do it. you said something in our interview for the film. when you talk about the idea that the reality could have been that these banks were wound down they could have been a debt restructuring program. you could have come in and said, listen, this is the problem. you could do everything you did. you could still do the bailout, still spin the wheels, the car is in the tree, but after you inflate the airbags, you don t have to let the same people drive the car the same way they drive it. the economists who praised themselves are still calling the shots. more people, same business model funded by us. the swaps market is bigger today than it was in 2008. correct. we re going to get each other all worked up. it is bailout, the story of america in a way that may be
military strikes in afghanistan after . after a decade of war, president obama is beginning to draw down american forces with the goal of pulling all combat troops out by the end of 2014. the american public is sometimes numb, i think, to the fact that this is america s longest war. and while they can look forward to it looking like it s going to be wound down, is there going to be any sense of victory as troops leave? well, that s an interesting way to put it as well, chuck, because it is america s longest w war, but when you talk to analysts and experts, they ll say the ten-year war has actually been a two-year war, because when the community came in in 2001, the focus was on afghanistan, but come 2003, the focus shifted to iraq. afghanistan quickly became known as the forgotten war, and that s
all right. the president has taken a lot of criticism for his response to the gulf oil disaster. remember, some said he simply wasn t being tough enough. so he addressed the nation from the oval office in primetime last night and that s a time and place most presidents reserve for war or crisis speeches. but make no mistake, we will fight this spill with everything we ve got for as long as it takes. we will make bp pay for the damage their company has caused. and we will do whatever s necessary to help the gulf coast and its people recover from this tragedy. all right. let s talk more about this. joining me, state of the union host, candy crowley. is this more than just the u.s.,
amount that spilled into the gulf over the last 58 days. one more example. assuming 68 barrels of day for 58 straight days, that would fill half of the empire state building. we re talking about a building that has 102 floors, fred. how much stock do we put in the numbers? we know the numbers have moved a lot in the course of the past two months. reporter: they certainly have. the government says this new number is the most comprehensive estimate today. it probably won t be the final word. scientists will continue to refine that number as they get more data. one big reason why it matters is bp may have to pay fines of up to $4,300 for every barrel spilled. getting the right number is critical. with the original estimate of 1,000, they could have owed $249 million over the days.
