government funding runs out december 16th and spending hawks say the best thing that congress can do before the holidays is keep the budget as is. not increase spending in this new budget because they say it will make inflation worse. the committee for responsible federal budget warning with inflation surging and debt approaching record levels policymakers should avoid worsening the deficit and should pledge to add no new debt for the rest of 2022. policymakers are considering an end of the year fiscal package that would make things much worse. calculating all the current spending wishes on the table the budget the democrats are writing behind closed doors could add 585 billion to the debt in the first year potentially adding as much as 1.5% to already high inflation. democrats who are out of power in the house in the new year think raising the debt ceiling and passing a budget are the two things they can do before republicans take charge. i hope they don t play games
obviously we should all get sick days, right? if the parties can t come to terms there could be the strike you just mentioned or other unions would honor that strike and that would mean that worst case scenario congress might step in. the effects to the economy would just be awful. they couldn t be worse. that s a problem the president now does seem to be sort of trying to distance himself from. where do you think this is headed? one thing that s kind of suspicious about all this is that the administration was able to get a temporary agreement. wasn t that interesting, julie, it was until right after the election so it wouldn t interfere with the elections. the elections are over and now we have new talks of a potential strike. this would if this happens again i think there is a decent chance it could be averted at the last minute, you think things are expensive now, julie? wait until we have a rail strike where you can t get the goods and services. will you have empty shelves in
lot of stores. my advice to christmas shoppers you might want to get out there this weekend and get the stuff while it is still available. then think about our food supply if you have that rail strike. when so much of our food and energy is transported by rail. it is a real potential crisis and i think you have to lay this right at the doorstep of the white house. julie: i can t imagine anyone allowing this to happen. with the holiday season and inflation making it impossible for people to get all their christmas presents in time, this would be a disaster. let s hope they figure it out. make sure your viewers know you said this but i want to repeat it. congress could intervene here. there is a decades long law with respect to rail because it is so critical to our infrastructure. let s hope it doesn t come to that and get this thing resolved. julie: not the best case scenario. thank you very much. appreciate you coming on.
