It was 53 years ago tonight (December 15th, 1969) that John Lennon and Yoko Ono assembled their legendary Plastic Ono Supergroup for a historic performance at London's Lyceum Ballroom. The event was part of UNICEF's Peace For Christmas concert, which featured a number of other performers including the Hot Chocolate Band, Jimmy Cliff, and the Rascals, among others. Lennon's backing band featured George Harrison marking the final time the pair ever shared a stage together Eric Clapton, Keith Moon, bassist Klaus Voormann, Lennon's primary drummer at the time and future Yes sticksman Alan White, Billy Preston, Delaney & Bonnie and their backing band which included drummer Jim Gordon, keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, and bassist Carl Radle who the next year would for Derek & The Dominoes with Clapton and horn players Jim Price and Bobby Keys who would soon move on to greener pastures as part of the Rolling Stones' touring band. It was 50 years ago today (August 30th, 1972) that John Lennon and Yoko Ono performed their only publicly announced, full-length concerts at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The two shows, known as the One To One concerts, included an afternoon matinee and an evening performance, and benefited the Willowbrook House, with the proceeds from the concerts going to help establish new accommodations for the mentally handicapped inhabitants of the former Willowbrook institution in Long Island, New York. The shows also included performances by Sha-Na-Na, Stevie Wonder, and Roberta Flack. John and Yoko closed both shows with a full concert set, featuring songs by each of them, backed by their then-band the Elephant's Memory. Lennon, decked out in iconic army fatigues, cowboy boots, and blue-tinted granny-glasses, played both electric guitar and electric piano. Yoko contributed some keyboard work, as well. Only 20 years old in December 1969, the Lyceum Ballroom concert marked White’s second performance with the Plastic Ono Band. Before that, he and the rest of the group had performed three months before at the Toronto Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival Festival and played the same songs they would play at the Lyceum, albeit with shorter runtimes; intriguingly, his participation almost did not occur when, sure that a call from John Lennon asking him to perform with a new group must be a prank, he immediately hung up.
