Free exhibition at the State Library from July 31 to August 20, 2021. 45 of the World’s best press photos from 2020 are on display The World Press Photo Exhibition which showcases the best visual journalism of the past year will be on show at the State Library of Western Australia from July 31 to August 20, 2021. The free exhibition presents the winners of the 2021 World Press Photo Contest. Since 1955, the annual contest has recognised professional photographers for the best pictures presented as individual photos or stories in eight categories captured in the past year of visual journalism. In an unprecedented year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice protests around the globe, the winners share a diversity of interpretations and perspectives to these and other urgent issues such as the climate crisis, transgender people’s rights, and territorial conflicts.

It was the second time the Danish photographer who shot the image has won the prestigious award. The choice of a winning photo portraying the global pandemic was almost inevitable for the contest covering a year in which news around the globe was dominated by the virus that has killed nearly three million people, including more than 360,000 in hard-hit Brazil.
