The new World Electric Vehicle of the Year category is intended to recognize, support and celebrate the global transition to electrically-powered vehicles that is now underway and to acknowledge the efforts of automakers around the world in developing these climate-conscious vehicles.
Since 2004, motoring journalists from across the globe have come together to assess the merits of the latest and greatest cars to shoot out of factories and design studios. Known as the World Car of the Year awards, the programme comprises 94 journos who are tasked with recognising excellence in the automotive industry. The awards have developed, now including more categories, including World Luxury Car, World Performance Car and World Urban Car awards.

World Car of the Year: Volkswagen ID.4
Claiming Volkswagen’s fifth WCOTY award is the brand’s newly launched ID.4 electric crossover. While not available in SA, the rules of the competition state the vehicle needs to be for sale on at least two continents and five countries. The winners of the 2021 World Car Awards have been announced, and unlike last year, the winners in the five categories were evenly spread, with different brands picking up each of the individual titles.
The Volkswagen ID.4 took home the biggest prize, being named as 2021 World Car of the Year. The all-electric SUV finished on top in the final round of voting, which saw three shortlisted candidates vying for the crown. The ID.4 obtained 798 points from jurors to finish ahead of the Honda e (742 points) and the Toyota Yaris (732 points), this year’s European Car of the Year.

The SUV, which is the second model in VW s new ID electric vehicle range, went on sale last year and in the UK costs from £41,570 for the most affordable Life version.
It was voted the winning vehicle by a jury of 93 international journalists from 28 countries who agreed it is the standout car of this year, securing the German brand s fifth crown at the World Car of the Year awards since it was established in 2004.
