Cuban judo players aiming for Tokyo 2020 await training base move to Cienfuegos Saturday, 30 January 2021
Cuban judoka aiming for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are awaiting approval of a training base in the central province of Cienfuegos.
Rafael Manso, President of Cuba’s National Judo Federation, told the
Cuban News Agency (ACN) that arrangements are being made for the men’s and women’s teams, coached respectively by Julio Alderete and double Olympic bronze medallist Yordanis Arencibia, to continue preparing for the postponed Games in Cienfuegos.
It is deemed safer than capital Havana, where the national teams of all disciplines are based, or training abroad, given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Tsukasa Yoshida won the women’s under-57 kg category to capture Japan’s first gold medal on the first day of action at the invitation-only International Judo Federation World Masters in Doha on Monday.

Doha: Since the resumption of the World Judo Tour at Grand Slam Hungary, last October, the judo world had been eagerly waiting for the launch of the new season. With the Doha World Judo Masters which begins today, this has been made possible, thanks to Qatar. The draw for Doha World Judo Masters – the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifying event took place at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall yesterday. With tight regulations in place as per the Ministry of Public Health guidelines, the Qatar Judo & Taekwondo Federation and the International Judo Federation have ensured a much looked forward to event. IJF President Marius Vizer thanked The Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during his welcome speech on the occasion of the draw, which was held entirely online.
Two-time Olympic champion Riner headlines IJF World Judo Masters in Doha Sunday, 10 January 2021
French Olympic champion Teddy Riner headlines the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Judo Masters which starts tomorrow in Doha.
Competition at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall is set to feature around 399 athletes from 69 countries.
Standout athletes include Riner in the men’s over-100 kilograms division.
The 31-year-old, who also has 10 world titles to his name, triumphed at London 2012 and Rio 2016.
He also went on an unbeaten run of 154 victories which lasted nearly 10 years, before Riner was finally vanquished by Japan’s Kokoro Kageura at last year’s Paris Grand Slam.
