Reflections on Black History Month: Jamaica Brickhouse

[February is Black History Month. For the month of February, RESULTS is sharing a series of spotlights of some of our staff and volunteers in the Black community. This post features Jamaica Brickhouse, a RESULTS advocate in Wilmington, Delaware.] I am not a stranger to adversity. I grew up as the oldest of five children in a single-parent household. Through each phase of my life, I have experienced some type of homelessness and poverty knowingly or unknowingly. Like most people in my community, I have quietly dealt with the effects of systemic racism and oppression, whether I was seeking employment, housing, or in the criminal justice system. For a long time, I did not know how to help myself and others on a larger, more impactful scale.

Hunger Relief During the Pandemic: A Photo Exhibit by Tom Simon

In his new exhibit, North Carolina photographer Tom Simon captures both the faces of hunger and the communal efforts to alleviate hunger that touch multiple geographies, cultures and systems throughout the state. The 35-photo exhibit, Lifeline: Hunger Relief During the Pandemic, was recently on display at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, NC, and can now be viewed online here: https://tomsimon.myportfolio.com/lifeline-hunger-relief-during-the-pandemic. You can also follow Tom on Instagram at @sisimon678. Tom Simon is a documentary filmmaker and tv producer who was volunteering as a photographer for local non-profits when the pandemic hit. He became interested in the weekly food distribution efforts that popped up during the pandemic, and decided to document what he saw. He writes,

DA Announces Dedicated Unit to Prosecute Workplace Crimes

The unit has its own prosecutor, investigator and paralegal. The team will be incorporated into the current Insurance Fraud Division, now named the Insurance Fraud and Workplace Justice Division. San Diegans who feel they may be the victim of a workplace crime can call the DA s workplace justice hotline at (866)402-6044 or make a report online here. The DA s office said the idea for the workplace unit came after a panel on workplace justice hosted with San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. The group felt there was a need to better protect workers who are often minorities or from disadvantaged communities.

SIGN NOW: Counselors not cops in schools!

There was yet another violent police attack on a child in school last week. We are once again enraged. [Content Warning: we describe the incident in this paragraph.] This time, a young Black girl at Liberty High School in Kissimmee, Florida was literally slammed to the ground by a sheriff’s deputy from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department. Witnesses state he attacked her after a disagreement between students, in yet another wanton and horrifying example of why cops have NO PLACE in our schools. As moms and parents we are once again horrified. And angry. And determined to make sure this does not happen again.
