Worcestershire County League round up: Rain plays havoc with fixtures

Report submitted by Worcestershire County League Only five matches tossed a coin and made a start on Saturday as the heavy showery downpours encountered across the region throughout last week put paid to nearly all of the scheduled matches in the Worcestershire County League without a ball being bowled. In the top five divisions who are playing the win/lose/draw format for the first six matches of the season only three matches were able to get underway, with all eventually suffering the same fate. In the Premier Division after waiting for three and quarter hours Stourport-on-Severn were inserted after losing the toss against Bromyard at Walshes Meadow in a match reduced to twenty eight overs a side. However, after just forty-five minutes play with the home team on 48-1 off 10 overs in the first innings a further heavy downpour put paid to events for the day.

Worcestershire league: only one game survived the weekend washout

Report submitted by Worcestershire County League The only game to survive the bad weather and play itself out to a full conclusion was at the War Memorial Ground in the Premier League and what a poignant match it was as Stourbridge Cricket Club somehow managed to stay dry enough for long enough to allow the home team to steal a march on the rest of the division by beating visitors and former champions Astwood Bank by three wickets. The last time these teams would have met was on the final day of the 2019 season (pre Covid-19) in the top of the table clash in which Astwood Bank turned round a points deficit by beating Stourbridge at Sambourne Lane, a win that decided the outcome of the inaugural Premier Division title and earned them a place in the Birmingham & District Premier League play-offs where they were unlucky to finish third out of four and mis out on promotion to the Regional League

Dan Wale (7-21) ensured he made the most of the helpful bowling conditions as he helped Stourbridge take full advantage of last week’s leaders Stourport’s misfortune of having their match cancelled due to a Covid-19 occurrence at Brockhampton last week, as his first innings haul helped the Glassboys beat local rivals Old Hill by three wickets at Haden Hill, a win that catapulted them to the top of the

Worcestershire County League: Astwood Bank take top spot

In the Premier Division five teams recorded opening day victories.  Astwood Bank occupy top spot after the beating Pershore at Sambourne Lane. Captain Tom Underhill (71) helped the Bank overhaul the visitors first innings total for the loss of just five wickets to gain a maximum-points win and top spot. Meanwhile Ryan Derrick’s (6-23) second innings return ensured Stourport kept up with the pace as he helped the visitors dismiss Redditch cheaply in the second innings at Bromsgrove Road to record a maximum-points win after Noman Choudhry (6-31) had put the home side in with a decent chance at the halfway stage.
