James Yodice: A late audible allows fans to see Carlsbad play Artesia

And chalk this marriage up to a bit of serendipity. It was Friday morning in Hobbs, and the school district’s Superintendent, T.J. Parks, was having breakfast with some pals, all former educators. Only recently have they been able to eat together again, with restaurants being available for seating. They were discussing this and that. Eventually, the conversation swung to the football rivalry game to be played later that night between Carlsbad and Artesia. A game that wouldn’t have any fans, because of Eddy County’s “red” health status. New Mexico counties in a “red” stage cannot stage a prep sporting event with fans, either indoors or outdoors.

A love affair with NMMI that never ends - Roswell Daily Record

She instilled in him a work ethic and a belief that education would be the key to turning his life around. Franklin didn’t bloom into a superstar overnight; he was a substitute off the bench his senior year. His coach had a rule that if you missed practice you didn’t start. As a senior at Yates High School, he was the sixth man for most of the year. The guy starting in front of him missed practice and Franklin got the start, scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds and never sat on the bench again.

(Daily Record File Photo) For the class of 2021, it seemed like there would be no school or sports. It will be 11 months since athletes have played competitively against another team. On Tuesday, Gov. Michelle Lujan-Grisham gave the OK for schools to reopen on Feb. 8. But schools will have to be in a hybrid model before sports can begin. When sports begins, seniors will play an abbreviated season due to the late timing of schools reopening. For seniors, it is not a full season, but it beats the alternative of not playing.

Not when he was used to playing and helping his Roswell football team win. Not only win but win championships. After having a year to grow and develop mentally and physically as a redshirt freshman, when the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds play in the spring, look for Justin Carrasco to play every down with 100% intensity like he does everything else.
