JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Late Thursday, the Senate approved a bill that could help cut down on street racing in Jackson.
S.B. 2788 gives the Mississippi Highway Patrol the authority to patrol interstate corridors anywhere in Mississippi.
Right now, state statute limits the highway patrol to interstate corridors in municipalities of 15,000 or fewer.
Lawmakers introduced the bill in response to a New Year’s night street racing incident that went viral on social media.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Another section of North State Street will soon be repaved.
On Tuesday, the Jackson City Council approved bringing on W.E. Blain and Sons, Inc., to mill and overlay a section of the street running from Sheppard Road to Briarwood Drive.
The contract is for just under $1.1 million.
Once the project is finished, North State promises to offer a much smoother commute for drivers all the way from Briarwood Drive in North Jackson to Fortification Street in Belhaven.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Lawmakers hope to introduce a bill by Monday that could help short-staffed cities quell street racing and other dangerous activities along the interstate.
District 25 Sen. Walter Michel and District 29 Sen. David Blount are working on a measure that would give the Mississippi Highway Patrol the authority to patrol interstate corridors in Jackson, Biloxi and other larger municipalities.
