WASHBURN The Washburn Police Department no longer exists.
The central Illinois village will continue to have regular police protection, albeit from the Woodford County Sheriff s Office. The change in jurisdiction is related, at least in part, to a probable change in state law.
Police-brutality cases and protests last year helped influence the recently approved Illinois crime-reform bill, which awaits Gov. JB Pritzker s signature.
The bill wasn t the main reason Washburn officials decided to dissolve the police force, according to Village President Steve Forney. The village that hugs the Marshall-Woodford county line, about 25 miles from Peoria, had considered a sheriff s-office patrol contract off and on for at least 30 years.
