A pioneering campaigner who successfully fought to save green belt land from being developed has died. Avril Chick was chairman of the Elstree & Borehamwood Green Belt Society, playing an important role in protecting much loved open space from developers. Mrs Chick left Borehamwood 15 years ago with her husband Doug, but is remembered fondly by those who knew her. Ann Goddard, current chairman of the green belt society, remembers the life of Mrs Chick who passed away in November, with the following memoir.

The council s head of planning has formally written to the government planning inspector to oppose a proposal to deregister Woodcock Hill in Borehamwood as a village green. Landowner and housebuilder Taylor Wimpey is offering to create a new green next door to the existing one - but planning chief Ross Whear says the proposed new site is less accessible . The council joins Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden in publicly condemning Taylor Wimpey s plans, along with more than 3,000 residents who have signed a petition to save Woodcock Hill.
