For restaurants, 2021 has brought some degree of hope. As workers and diners get vaccinated, restaurant dining rooms are beginning to more closely resemble pre-pandemic scenes. But the costs of 2020 linger. Many restaurants are struggling to hire staff. Months worth of deferred rent payments now due could push more to close for good; scores of restaurants already have. Even as the old tollbooths are coming down on the New York State Thruway, NewsChannel 13 has uncovered a safety issue with the new cashless tolling structures that replaced them.
A tip came into NewsChannel 13 Investigates that a large box-like piece of equipment fell off the cashless tolling gantry at Exit 16 in February. That s the Woodbury Commons exit.
NewsChannel 13 started asking questions and the Thruway Authority confirmed that it was a 40-pound piece of equipment that fell.
Fortunately, it landed on the shoulder of the road and no one was injured. However, changes have now been made to these new structures across the entire state, including here in the Capital Region.
GOSHEN – Orange County is considering using some federal relief money from the American Rescue Plan to help promote tourist attractions and businesses large and small – including Legoland.
The topic came up at a recent news conference in Wurtsboro hosted by U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer. Spectrum News reported that Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, who spoke during the March 31 event, mentioned the county is considering using some of the money to benefit Legoland.
But Orange County spokesman Justin Rodriguez on April 2 said it s a little too early for details on how the county may choose to use this funding for tourism. Questions about that might be premature, Rodriguez said.
