reporter: well, the turnout was disappointing, but also the reaction the women received was disappointing. you know, many of the women had come for what they called a celebration of the huge role that women played here during the egyptian uprising. women who were very much present during the protests before the fall of president hosni mubarak. instead they were surrounded by male demonstrators who were chanting at them to go home. but this was not the time to be calling for women s rights. this was the time to be banding together. and speaking to some of the activists, that s been their concern from the beginning, that they would play this huge role during the uprising. but as soon as they came to try and actually talk about generui power and political role, the women would be sidelined eside. there were some demonstrations that led to president mubarak s departure, that it was a turning point for women in egypt.

shouting match today between female activists and men chanting anti-feminist slogans. despite their help in organizing the revolution, women in egypt are largely being left out of building egypt s new government. nbc s ann thompson is on the ground in cairo. ann, this was supposed to be a big demonstration for fair and equal opportunity. how did this all get unravelled today? reporter: well, what happened, and rea, women gatherd in tahrir square. first of all, there are far fewer than a million. there are a couple hundred of women there. they wanted to celebrate in tahrir square. they felt the revolution was the starting point for women to achieve equal citizenship in this country. it is still a male-dominated society. and as the women stood there and they chanted, suddenly this group of young men started chanting things that women should go home, that they should stay in the home and the proof of that is that god didn t make any female prophets.
