Gunmen kill two policemen, seize rifles, set van ablaze in Akwa Ibom

There was palpable tension in Akwa Ibom State following a fresh attack by gunmen on a police checkpoint at Urua Inyang community in Ika Local government area of Akwa Ibom state and killed a woman Police Corporal and Police Special Constabulary.
The hoodlums also set a police patrol van stationed at the checkpoint ablaze during the attack which occurred late in the evening of Tuesday.
It was gathered that the hoodlums suspected to be the same miscreants a few weeks ago during the joint military operations in Essien Udim Local Government Area on many motorcycles stormed the police checkpoint and opened fire on the officers.

A female police officer was shot dead on Tuesday by some gunmen in Ika Local Government Area,
The police spokesperson in the state, Odiko MacDon, confirmed the killing which appeared to be a continuation of the attack against security agents in the country’s South-east and South-south regions.
Mr MacDon identified the slain police officer as Esther Akpan, a police corporal.
She was killed alongside a police special constabulary, Isonuyo Paul.
“On 27/4/2021, at about 7:00 p.m., some armed men on motorcycles heading towards Ika Divisional Headquarters vicinity, armed with AK-47 and other dangerous weapons with the intent to attack the Division and set it ablaze met stiff resistance as the Divisional Police Officer and other officers on ground fought gallantly and repelled the attackers who took to their heels with possible bullet wounds,” Mr MacDon, a superintendent of police, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Odiko MacDon, Akwa Ibom police spokesperson, confirmed the attack on Wednesday.
Macdon, who noted that the gunmen came in motorcycles and burnt down a police vehicle, said the attack occurred on Tuesday.
The officers have been identified as Esther Akpan and Isonuyo Effiong Paul.

The police spokesman explained that the gunmen attempted to raze the divisional headquarters, but were repelled by officers on the ground.
