Young scientist revolutionises blood glucose test

May 6, 2021 A young scientist who developed a way to test blood glucose levels without using the traditional way of pricking the finger, will compete against more than a thousand scientists in the world’s largest science fair, the 2021 Virtual Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the US. The scientist is Eskom Expo for Young Scientists’ top senior scientist for 2020, Hritik Mitha, a grade 12 learner at Bryanston High School in Johannesburg. His project, “Non-invasive blood glucose level monitoring device”, is aimed at mitigating the drawbacks of the invasive glucometer test. He developed prototypes that proved to be practical and effective in measuring glucose levels to a clinical standard.

Young innovator looks to improve mine safety

Jan 29, 2021 After scooping a number of awards at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists virtual awards, Greenside High School pupil Muhammed Hassen has big dreams of improving the safety standards in South African mines. Hassen, currently in Grade 11, won a gold medal at the virtual awards ceremony held last month. His prizes included a partial scholarship from Wits University’s Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, a special award for innovation in information technology from the South African Institution of Civil Engineering’s IT Division, a laptop from Babcock, and the Meiring Naudé Award for the most inspiring project. Eskom GM of Risk and Sustainability, Andrew Etzinger, says: “Eskom is very proud to be the main sponsor of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists over many years.
