Cabinet and Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande discussed the university fees crisis during this week’s meeting of the executive, says the department.

Nzimande’s spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says the minister is currently in contact with Wits management and council to establish facts regarding the latest strikes and the death of a man during Wednesday’s protest.
Some Wits students and the SRC have been raising the issue of the exclusion of students who owe the university money over the past week, with the protest culminating in the death of passer-by on Wednesday.

It s understood the man happened to be passing by as officers were trying to disperse the protesters who are unhappy about financial exclusion.
Netcare 911 s Shawn Herbst says paramedics found the man lying on a pavement. On arrival, the patient was found unresponsive on the pavement. A Netcare 911 Emergency Care Practitioner assessed the man however he showed no signs of life and sadly declared deceased. All relevant authorities were on the scene.
