welcome back to msnbc. we have been following breaking news on capitol hill, the election and swearing-in of a new speaker of the house, paul ryan taking the oath of office just a few moments ago. nbc s luke russert is live on capitol hill with a special guest. hey, luke. hey there, craig, thanks so much for throwing to me. we just saw paul ryan become the 54th speaker of the house of representatives. i ll joined now by somebody who was in line for the job but then took a step back and thas the current majority leader, kevin mccarthy. thank you for joining us. what was it like for you watching that whole process, you were so close? i m excited. paul and i have been such good friends for a long time, we wrote a book together. i think paul is the right man at the right time. if you noticed, he united this conference and that s what we need needed. i think we needed a fresh face, we needed to unite the conference. i feel very good about my decision. you ve always got to put this count
him. he has been doing well in the polls. the latest polls in in tha s is hampshire. he is leading, up 42 to clinton s 28%. also in iowa, certainly how he draws the poll distinctions with clinton up there on the debate stage will be very important, it will be key for him. and that s something that i asked sanders about as he approaches, as he prepares for the debate. you re looking at a candidate who has run in many, many elections. have held executive positions in my life. and you re looking at a candidate that does not go without attacking people personally. i just don t do that. but what i think democracy is about and what i think of debate is all about, is in fact, differentiating the differences
pilot at 18 years old. jeb bush has some of the same temperament. he s not bombastic. he doesn t feed the beast. at a very angry time in the republican party the question is whether or not he has enough oomph. and donald trump has explored that. whether thoughtful wins the day. i m flattered that you think i m not old enough to remember that but i do remember. dana bash, david axaxelrod, thas for joining. how about levitty, jimmy fallon and stephen colbert taking jabs at the donald. still a huge source of laughs. we ll have the best of late night for you.
