The death toll in the flash floods has gone up to 77, While Sikkim accounted for 37 deaths, 40 other bodies were found in the riverbed of a raging Teesta in the neighbouring Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. The number of missing persons is around 79 persons. Around 28 persons have been reported injured till date.
The Indian government has sent Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra to Sikkim to assess the damage caused by flash floods. Mishra chaired a meeting with state government officials and representatives from various ministries to discuss assistance measures. The government has also formed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team to visit the state and evaluate the situation. Mishra visited affected areas and praised the efforts of the Indian Army and ITBP in conducting rescue operations.
