After four years stranded at sea, Syrian man finally goes home
After four years of being stuck on a ship in Egyptian waters, Mohammed Aisha returned home to Syria this week.
According to BBC, Aisha, who hails from Tartus, said he felt ‘relief’ and ‘joy,’ and like he ‘finally got out of prison.’
Aisha’s ordeal began on May 5, 2017 when he boarded the MV Aman as the ship’s chief officer.
Unable to pass a safety inspection, the MV Aman was detained in the Egytian port of Adabiya. With Lebanese contractors unwilling to pay for more fuel, the ship’s Bahraini owners facing financial trouble, and the ship’s captain ashore, a court declared Aisha the ship’s guardian.
