A CHARITY has won a major national award for its work improving the lives of people affected by domestic abuse. The Wish Centre in Blackburn was chosen from more than 350 charities across the UK as one of the 10 winners of the 2021 GSK IMPACT Awards. The awards are designed to recognise the outstanding work of small and medium sized charities working to improve health and wellbeing in communities across the UK. Winners receive £30,000 in unrestricted funding as well as expert support and leadership development provided by leading health and care charity The King’s Fund. Chief Executive Officer of The Wish Centre, Shigufta Khan, said: “We are honoured to have won this prestigious national award, providing valuable recognition for the staff, trustees and volunteers at The Wish Centre.

A DOMESTIC violence support advocate has left a hole in the hearts of her family and friends after her death last week. Shaheda Rashid worked at The Wish Centre in Blackburn, where she was from, as an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor, helping many people escape troubling situations at home. The mum of four, with the two youngest at 15 and 13, died aged 48 last Friday, January 22 after becoming ill with an immune deficiency and later caught coronavirus while in hospital for two weeks, which led to pneumonia. Her daughter, 23-year-old Nadia Rashid, said: “We don’t blame the hospital for her catching Covid, it is just so fast spread, it’s upsetting but it can happen to anyone.
