MADISON, Wis. â University of Wisconsin System President Tommy Thompson announced today that 267 UW System students will share $1 million in scholarships under the new Wisconsin Regents Opportunity Scholarship program.
The program provides scholarships to underrepresented and deserving students in one of three phases of their higher education pursuit: prior to enrollment, while continuing studies, and near completion. Students are nominated by their universities and receive the scholarships from UW System.
âThis new scholarship program will become a UW System cornerstone as we redirect resources to benefit students,â Thompson said. âIt will help us diversify our student body by recruiting more students, ensuring they continue their studies, and providing financial help for the final push toward graduation.â

Five UW System schools to put higher education counselors into targeted high schools to help guide students to college Devi Shastri, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
In a novel initiative to address a series of challenges on Wisconsin campuses projections of declining enrollment, recruiting and supporting students of color and the damage of COVID-19 five universities are putting counselors in targeted high schools to help guide students to higher education.
The University of Wisconsin campuses will each put $200,000 toward helping high school students, particularly those who are the first in their families to attend college, navigate what can seem like one hurdle after another. That help could take the form of helping fill out financial aid and scholarship applications, ACT/SAT prep work, career planning and understanding the concept of choosing a major.
