If I didn t grow up over in Wisconsin, I d be totally intrigued and probably grossed out by the state s annual warning about eating raw meat.
The interwebs are abuzz right now with the latest warning from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services about how residents of America s Dairyland shouldn t eat raw meat. Wait, what s that? Raw meat? Why would anyone eat raw meat?!?
Well, it turns out it s all because of a holiday tradition in some parts of Wisconsin. Raw meat is a part of something called a cannibal sandwich ? It s an old-school Wisconsin holiday treat that s apparently making a comeback these days where it originated, in the southeast part of the state near Milwaukee. (Check the video below to see what one looks like!)

Ever heard of a cannibal sandwich ? Apparently it s a tradition in Wisconsin - and local health officials are warning against it.
Also called a tiger meat sandwich, it consists of raw beef garnished with salt, pepper, and raw onions served on rye bread.
That might sound gross to you, but it s a holiday tradition for hundreds of Midwesterners - enough that the Wisconsin Health Department issued a warning that eating raw meat can lead to salmonella, e. coli, or other bacteria-related illnesses.
The USDA says ground beef should always be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F.

Ever heard of a
cannibal sandwich ? Apparently it s a tradition in Wisconsin so much so that local health officials are now issuing warnings against it.
Also called a tiger meat sandwich, the cannibal sandwich consists of raw beef garnished with salt, pepper, and raw onions served on rye bread. While that might sound gross to you, it really is a holiday tradition for hundreds of Midwesterners! But unfortunately for them, the Wisconsin Health Department just issued a warning that eating those traditional raw sandwiches can lead to salmonella, e. coli, or other bacteria-related illnesses. Many Wisconsin families consider them to be a holiday tradition, but eating them poses a threat for Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Campylobacter and Listeria bacteria that can make you sick, the department wrote in a Facebook post.

Every region has its own regional delicacies – food that makes sense there, but might be a bit more confusing out of it. Take, for example, sweet potato casserole with marshmallows – a common dish at Thanksgiving in many parts of the US.
Here’s another – raw meat sandwiches. Yes, actual raw meat sandwiches, which nobody in their right mind should be eating.
It all started when a Facebook post from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reminded people in the state not to partake in the ‘holiday tradition’ of raw meat sandwiches.
The Facebook post said that these sandwiches are called “tiger meat” or “cannibal” sandwiches and that many Wisconsin families consider them to be a holiday tradition. The Department had to remind people that eating raw meat can lead to salmonella and E Coli – and that ground beef should always be cooked.
