Morning brief: Odisha train crash death toll climbs to 294, Russia-Ukraine war updates, & more

The death toll from the train tragedy in the Balasore district of eastern India's Odisha state climbed to 294 on Sunday (June 4) and over 1,000 people have been injured. The restoration work is underway at the spot of the accident. As the war in Ukraine rages on, a Russian-installed official claimed on Sunday that a drone was shot down in Dzhankoi in annexed Crimea and caused damage to some infrastructure.  And in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan began his third decade in power by replacing almost all members of his cabinet except for the ministers for health and culture.

In India's eastern state of Odisha, a horrific three-train collision between two passenger trains and a freight train has resulted in the death of at least 288 people, while another 900 people were injured. Amid the tragedy, reports of locals queuing up all night to donate blood, to help the injured, have emerged. Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has said that dialogue between the United States and China is "essential' to prevent any miscalculation or conflict.

As a massive debt crisis in the United States looms, US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Monday (May 22) that talks with President Joe Biden to counter the threat were productive, but there was no agreement on how to raise the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling. McCarthy said that their staff would continue the talks and he also believes that they "can still get there".
