Over the past month verbal attacks, denigrating comments, erroneous accusations, name calling and threats against journalists, NGOs, environmental activists and human rights defenders have mushroomed. Such actions have originated from several sources, including senior members of Government, individuals who appear to be paid or unpaid advisers, social media personalities, columnists and anonymous Facebook page operators. These attacks including threats have been publicized in the media so they are widely available for anyone to read, plus the probability that similar attacks could take place places persons identified and others at increased risk of harm.
I write with reference to a letter under the title “These assaults on journalists in Guyana exhibit the characteristics of authoritarian countries” (published on April 18, 2023). The letter by a group of twenty-six well-known anti-government operatives is pregnant with manufactured misinformation that would make Noam Chomsky run for cover.
Allow me to respond to Red Thread’s opinion piece – “Mr. Persaud should understand that the term grassroots is not restricted to his limited interpretation” published on April 7, 2023. The letter signed by Wintress White, Halima Khan, Joy Marcus, Shirley Ault, Susan Collymore, Vanessa Ross, Maeve Ramsay, Jonel Perreira, Michelle John, is further confirmation that Red Thread is rudderless outfit excepting for its commitments to the wild ambitions of the WPA.
Non-profit organization, Red Thread will today be taking to the streets to protest in front of the Office of the President (OP) on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown to demand a better deal from oil major, ExxonMobil.
