MORRISTOWN, NJ - This year, Unity Charter School embarked on a new adventure: developing a World Culture program. Happily, I am the Artist in Residence, who gets to develop the foundation for this program. This year learning groups chose a specific region of the world to explore. With the inauguration of this program, I’ve started by asking students to make work tied into the regions they are studying. Looking through an art historical lens, we’ve focused on one thin slice of the material culture and traditions of a place. And then the challenge I’ve given them is to make a piece of art that spins off from those traditions and forms, a piece that is filtered through their own experiences of the world.
