Heavy frosts across almost all Ukrainian regions in the first half of January did not have a negative impact on winter grain crops, which are in mostly satisfactory condition, analyst APK-Inform quoted government scientists as saying on Monday. Winter wheat has historically accounted for about 95% of all wheat grown in Ukraine, but the yield depends largely on favourable weather conditions from autumn to late spring. "Such weather conditions have no negative impact on wintering of winter crops and today winter crops in Ukraine are in satisfactory condition," APK-Inform cited Ukraine's National Agrarian Academy as saying of the recent frosts.
The bulk of Ukrainian crops have entered the winter season in predominantly good condition, analyst APK-Inform quoted the country's state weather forecasters as saying on Thursday. Ukraine is a grower of winter wheat, winter barley and winter rapeseed. "During the second ten-day period of November, agrometeorological conditions for the end of the growing season of winter crops were quite satisfactory," APK-Inforn quoted forecasters as saying in a report.
Ukrainian farmers in four oblasts have completed sowing winter crops, with 4.95 million hectares planted in total, the Agriculture Ministry reported on Oct. 24.
The prices for wheat saw a maximum increase of 7 percent, with MSP assured at Rs 2,275 per quintal, up from Rs 2,125 offered in the last rabi marketing season
