Mount Airy, N.C. Mount Airy took a tremendous leap forward in its 2019-20 basketball campaign.
Just one calendar year before, the Granite Bears were 7-16 overall and had one conference victory. Mount Airy flipped that into winning 15 games (15-10, 7-3 record) and finishing second in the league’s standings when the regular season came to a close.
The Northwest 1A Conference is ultra-competitive each year, but Mount Airy finished behind only Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy eventual co-state champion at the 1A level in 2019-20. The Granite Bears’ three conference defeats came against the Phoenix (twice) and East Surry (once) during the 10-game stretch.
