TrackInsight: Stock Market Pullback Amid Growing Concerns Over Slow Rollout of COVID-19 Vaccines February 2, 2021
Week from 25 to 31 January 2021
Global stocks cooled down after the recent market frenzy as doubts over vaccine supply have been creeping in, especially in Europe where delivery delays have forced several countries to slow down or even halt their vaccination programs.
The
Dow Jones Industrial Average fell -3.27% week-over-week, or almost 1,015 points, shrugging off the Fed’s accommodative comments on monetary policy. The
S&P 500 was down -3.31% (-1.11% month-to-date) while the
Russell 2000 plundged 4.39%. The VIX index spiked 51%, from 22 to more than 33 at market close. Volatility was also fueled by the war between an incredible number of retail traders and short-selling hedge funds such as Melvin Capital, which resulted in sharp squeezes in a handful of midcap stocks.
