Officials say source of elevated metals near Chemtool is unclear

ROCKFORD, Ill. It’s unclear whether elevated levels of heavy metals found in groundwater monitoring wells on the Beloit Corporation Superfund site in Rockton are because of the Chemtool fire, from the former Beloit Corporation or other industries in the area, Winnebago County Public Health Administrator Dr. Sandra Martell said Friday. “It can’t be assumed to be from Chemtool as the Superfund site is much larger than the area of Chemtool,” Martell said. Superfund sites are federally designated areas where the Environmental Protection Agency investigates and cleans up sites contaminated by hazardous substances. She said the Rock River has been used for years by industry, and people didn’t know what the impact would be from dumping in the river. Martell added there could be metals throughout the region.

Fire suppression continues at Chemtool site in massive emergency response

ROCKTON, Ill. An air pollution complaint against the Chemtool plant in Rockton has been referred to the Illinois Attorney General by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The complaint cites violations of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act and Illinois Pollution Control Board Regulations related to the chemical fire and release of pollutants into the atmosphere, according to a news release issued by the agency. The referral asks the attorney general to pursue legal action and require Chemtool to stop the release and provide documentation to the agency including the cause of the fire and an estimate of the nature and amount of any emissions of sulfuric acid mist, particulate matter and other air contaminants emitted as a result of the fire, the news release states.

Local leaders optimistic about making vaccines available to all adults by May

Local leaders optimistic about making vaccines available to all adults by May ROCKFORD (WREX) With President Biden s announcement that all adults be available for a COVID-19 vaccine by May 1, we asked local health department leaders if they thought that was feasible. Winnebago County Public Health Administrator Dr. Sandra Martell said the date acts as a target for her and other health leaders across the country. She added that this doesn t mean that all Phase 1B or even all Phase 1A will be completely vaccinated by the time May rolls around. Rather this is a chance for her department to prep and communicate with the state and federal government as vaccine supplies slowly continue to rise.
