Wings Interactive, the video games fund supporting titles made by developers from marginalised genders, has announced the funding of four new projects.
The selected games are narrative-adventure title Button City, from Subliminal Games, strategy and resource management title Illuminaria from Selva Interactive, The Fermi Paradox, a space sim from Anomaly Games, and Kabaret, a visual novel from Persona Theory Games.
In its announcement, Wings reminded that only 1% of Venture Capital funds go to female founders, while there are 22% of game creators identifying as women. The company is currently funding projects up to $500,000.
Wings co-founder Audrey Leprince commented: We are proud to work with such talented developers who are bringing some truly unique games to the market, and we are excited to continue our mission to support creations by those typically overlooked for funding.
The IGDA Foundation announced the launch of its Diverse Game Developers Fund, a $300,000 grant for marginalised devs.
The fund was created in partnership with Grant for the Web, and aims at exploring monetisation options outside the traditional boundaries, which have been built by and for a western audience, the announcement said.
At least $200,000 of the Diverse Game Developers Fund will go towards indie developers and studios so they can continue working on their prototypes, while $50,000 has been earmarked for academic scholarships. The rest of the funds will be used as prizes for game jams.
Developers and students interested in applying can do so on this page, from today until March 15, 2021, at 12pm PT.
When starting your own studio, there are challenges you can anticipate. Practical, tangible questions that you no doubt started thinking about long before you actually set up shop. How do you register as a company? Where will you be based? What sort of talent will you need to hire? How much money do you require?
But then there s also a wealth of unexpected obstacles, aspects you didn t even think would come into play. You can really only know about these facets once you have gone through the process of building up a studio already.
These challenges were the focus of a Yorkshire Games Festival talk called Things I ve learned (so far) about running a games studio, from Silver Rain Games co-founder and studio head Melissa Phillips.
