Hyderabad, April 23 : Nine empty oxygen tankers from Telangana were airlifted to Odisha on Friday to bring back oxygen faster to the state for supply to hospitals treating Covid patients.
Two C-17 planes of the Indian Air Force (IAF) were used to airlift the tankers from Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad to liquid oxygen plants in Odisha
Health Minister E. Rajender and Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar supervised the airlifting operation at the airport.
The minister said the tankers will return by road to bring 150 tonnes of oxygen to the state by April 27. He claimed that this is the first instance in the country where war planes were used to airlift oxygen tankers.

In view of the pressing requirement of medical oxygen, Telangana government has hired two cargo aircraft of the Indian Air Force to ferry eight empty tankers to Odisha to bring liquid oxygen, Health Minister Etela Rajender said on Friday. The oxygen are to be brought from the steel plants in Rourkela and Angul, Odisha.

Following the directions of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, the State government, taking the help of a Defence aircraft, has airlifted eight oxygen tankers to the liquid oxygen plants located in Odisha.
This will enable the planes to bring oxygen to Hyderabad from Odisha. Two C17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force were deployed for the purpose commanded by Wing Commander Chaitanya and Wing Commander Nijhawan.
This move will not only save time but will also help in resolving the oxygen shortage problem in the State to a great extent. It is a first instance when oxygen tankers have been airlifted.
