Frost-bitten Britain: Polar winds see UK suffer third sub-zero morning in row

Advertisement Britain is set for another bitterly cold day with -6C lows on the third sub-zero morning in a row and 3cm of snow in parts of Scotland as chill winds swept in front the Arctic.  A yellow warning for snow is in place across northern Scotland until 10am today, with warnings of transport disruption from the flurries.  It came after temperatures plummeted as low as minus 4.2C overnight as the chilly weather continued to set a jarring contrast from the warm, sunny Easter weekend.  The cold conditions are expected to continue into next week - suggesting drinkers will have to wrap up warm for the return of al fresco dining on April 12.

Parts of UK see minus 4C and up to 11cm of snow

Temperatures plummeted as low as minus 4.2C (24.4F) overnight as parts of the UK were hit by up to 11cm (4.3in) of snow, with another chilly night predicted. Widespread frost and sub-zero conditions across Scotland, England and Wales led to a cold start for most on Tuesday. The mercury plunged to minus 4.2C in Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway, while a low of minus 4.1C (24.6F) was recorded at Winchcombe Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire. Much of the UK will see a bright, settled day, but more wintry showers are expected in northern Scotland, where 11cm (4.3in) was recorded in Loch Glascarnoch by 10am.
