presidential election that year. you got to go back to 1998. remember, these two guys, ben n benson, dukakis. they ran for president, vice president. lloyd benson, the last democrat to win a senate race in texas, 30 years ago. you got to go back to 1984 to find a single democrat who won any statewide election in texas. basically an entire generation without a democrat winning statewide. that s what democrats are up against. why would they think it might be different this year? mentioned it is a midterm. there s also this diversity. texas has been changing demographically. you see a bigger latino population. a slightly larger black population. these groups voting more and more democratic. there s an opportunity there for democrats. like we said, there s just the fact that, hey this is the trump midterm. trump carried texas by nine points. that s a pretty healthy margin. but that s low compared to what republicans have been doing. usually in the double diblgits. so trump lost some ground

right, at the very end. but i would sense that some of that dissatisfaction is more on the right than on the left. and your last piece, kevin, you wrote, in part, a big obstacle for democrats in texas is a history of low voter turnout, especially among latinos. have fights over immigration, have they galvanized democrats at all in texas? yes, i think they re galvanizing democrats. the thing you ve got to watch out for in texas is increasing the latino vote doesn t necessarily take democrats to the promised land. republicans poll or do very well with hispanic with latinos in texas. they get upwards of upper 30s, low 40s. so just simply getting latinos to the polls is not going to get the democrats over the top. that said, it will help, and they re certainly trying to make that push. but, yes, historically, latinos
