For those who have not been here before, our project is focused on history that also provides insights into contemporary affairs. When we think about, when historians think about what are the most important events in world history, and world war i usually comes out at number one, and americans tend to be fixated on the other wars like the civil war and world war ii, but this is the most important, and we are here today to try to provide some additional awareness, and so 100 years ago to this very day, Woodrow Wilson appeared before a joint session of congress here in washington to deliver his 14 points speech. I represented a huge part of the mexican border, and there are some history there of people making phone calls on election day to my saying, how many for me and how many for the other guy, and the answer might be, well, how many do you need . Nothing has changed our policy more than 9 11. It was a major shift, we have been reacting to that event ever sense. We created the department of homeland security, the National Director of intelligence, invaded afghanistan and iraq. This war fight effectively . It is unlike any other battle that we have ever fought. What i want to do this morning is set the frame for where we are at and where we should go. More than a dozen years after the event, how are we doing, what are the challenges, how do we move forward. The central challenge that we have is we are still trying to accomplish two things. It is still a war, people forget that. Al qaeda declared war on us in they have not changed their mind. The only thing stopping them from attacking us is our ability to stop them.
