Newport Beach approves $309 1-million operating budget for 2021-22 fiscal year

Print The city of Newport Beach recently approved its $309.1-million budget for the upcoming fiscal year, set to begin July 1. Members of the City Council got a first look at the proposed budget at a study session on May 25, and all proposed revisions were wrapped into the budget presented on June 8. The $309.1 million accounts for City Manager Grace Leung’s operating budget for the city. The capital improvement program budget is $35.5 million. About $195.9 million in capital spending over the next six years will be earmarked for projects like street and roadway maintenance, beach improvements and storm drains. Current budget proposals are projected based off of the assumption that some resources will improve over the next year, albeit not to pre-pandemic levels.

Print The Newport Beach City Council this week got a preview of the projects that could come through the pipeline when they set next fiscal year’s budget. During a study session held Tuesday, city staff presented a short list of projects that could be considered for 2021-22. Projects are selected through a review of the facility finance plan, facility maintenance and management plan, pavement management plan, water master plan and the sewer master plan. Deputy public works director Jim Houlihan said in his presentation that city staff is proposing a capital improvement program budget of $69.8 million. About $30.6 million of that will involve new funding while $39.2 million will be re-budgeted, although that number is expected to drop in coming months.

Print The long-awaited headquarters for Newport Beach’s junior lifeguards program may soon arrive on the city’s shores with the unanimous approval of conceptual plans by the Newport Beach City Council. On Tuesday night, the council voted 6-0, with Mayor Pro Tem Kevin Muldoon absent, to approve the conceptual plans for the $4.9 million project just south of Balboa Pier. The conceptual plans expand upon previous plans introduced to elected officials in 2018 and, again, in April 2019. The initial estimated cost of a 4,100-square-foot building was $3.3 million, according to city staff. The new proposal is for an approximately 5,145-square-foot permanent facility in the A Street parking lot south of Balboa Pier.
