Bart Starr resisted giving up his authority over personnel matters President Robert Parins and the executive committee didn’t stop him from hiring Ron Wolf Mar 11, 2021 at 09:30 AM

Several years ago, I read that in 1978 GM/HC Bart Starr went to the board of directors and said he wished to give up his dual position and continue to serve as head coach only. He recommended that the team hire Ron Wolf, then employed by Tampa Bay, as the new general manager. The board, according to the article, rejected Starr s offer and he continued to serve in both positions. In My Life in Football, Starr s abbreviated autobiography, he says nothing about this incident. But he is openly apologetic about the two dreadful draft mistakes he made in 1979 and 1981: passing on Joe Montana for defensive tackle Charles Johnson and choosing quarterback Rich Campbell instead of safety Ronnie Lott. If it is true that Wolf could have been Pa

Victorian Andrew Martin has broken through for the biggest win of his professional career but it took a world record four eagles and his lowest score in 15 years on tour to do it.
Beginning the final round of The Players Series Sydney eight shots from the top of the leaderboard, Martin sent statisticians and leaderboard attendants into a frenzy with a front nine at Bonnie Doon Golf Club that featured four eagles, a birdie and a bogey to draw within striking distance of overnight leader Charlie Dann.
Three bogeys in succession by Dann after the turn saw Martin edge clear and when he completed his 10-under 61 with a birdie at the 18th hole set a clubhouse total of 18-under for the likes of Dann and Jordan Zunic to chase.

When the Toronto Argonauts hired Corey Chamblin in December 2018, he was one of three Black head coaches hired in the CFL within an eight-day span. That would have been monumental news had it happened south of the border, but it was barely mentioned at all in Canada because hiring someone of colour in the CFL is hardly groundbreaking news.
Occasions like that don’t become relatively mundane in terms of newsworthiness without people having previously blazed the trail. The Toronto Argonauts have had some pretty special people break barriers and their accomplishments should be celebrated.

Joe Montana s QB GOAT case starts here. At the peak of his powers at age 33, the 49ers icon was on his own tier in 1989. His completion percentage (70.2), yards per attempt (9.1) and passer rating (112.4) look confusing when compared to his peers. Apex Jerry Rice (17 TDs), Roger Craig and John Taylor made 1989 the West Coast Offense s masterwork, despite Bill Walsh having retired after the 88 season. The defense ranked third, too. The 49ers went 14-2, losing by five total points, and obliterated the Vikings, Rams and Broncos by a 126-26 margin in the playoffs. George Seifert s debut team may be the NFL s best ever.
Premature losses after Super Bowl XLV left Packers with holes Big holes, not easily or quickly replaced Jan 14, 2021 at 09:30 AM Charlie Riedel, AP Green Bay Packers Nick Collins, top right, celebrates his interception for a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the NFL Super Bowl XLV football game Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, in Arlington, Texas.
The Green Bay Packers have been to the playoffs seven times since they last won a Super Bowl and just about everyone seems to have their opinion as to why they haven t added another Vince Lombardi Trophy to their collection.
Among the reasons and one that should be near the top of the list is the number of supremely talented players on the 2010 Packers who had their careers prematurely ended by injuries or their stays in Green Bay cut short for other reasons.
